Piste – A guide to the Best European ski slopes in the Alps for skiing, snowboarding and valleys.

Before reading about the slops of Europe – its good to have some idea about the indicators for various slops in Europe.Piste Marking Alps ski slopes for skiing and snowboarding

    • Green – (not always marked): too easy for all – Learner or Beginner slopes – slope grades ranging from 6% to 25%
    • Blue – easy trails not Intermediate trails and doesn’t exceed 25% slope grade.
    • Red – Intermediate slope, the slope gradient does not exceed 40% unless for short wide sections with a higher gradient. Sometimes marked as a red rectangle. Red slopes are open for intermediate skiers and boarders to improve their skills.
    • Black – Expert slope – steep, equivalent to the North American Black Diamond or Double Black Diamond. Steep, may or may not be groomed. In Austria, Italy and Switzerland black pistes are nearly always groomed, as non-groomed pistes are marked as ski-routes or itineraries – in France, some black pistes are groomed, but most are not. Black can be a very wide classification, ranging from a slope marginally more difficult than a Red to very steep avalanche chutes like the infamous Couloirs of Courchevel. France tends to have a higher limit between red and black. Sometimes marked as a black diamond.
    • Orange – Means extremely difficult, and may be found only in certain countries like Austria and Switzerland.
    • Yellow, orange square, red diamond

Yellow: Usually a “ski route,” which may be an uncontrolled or ungroomed off-piste area as of lately, many resorts reclassified some black slopes to yellow slopes. This signifies a ski route or itinerary, an ungroomed and unpatrolled slope which is actually off-piste skiing in a marked area.

Well-known examples are the Stock horn area in Zermatt and the Tortin slopes in Verbier. In Austria, ski routes are usually marked with orange squares instead. It is also common to mark those pistes with a red diamond or a red diamond with black edges (the latter being more difficult).

Ski resort and slopes in the Alps for Skiers and snowboarders

Chamonix (France – Mont Blanc, 4,807m – the highest in Europe) – The capital of all-mountain skiing and snowboarding, mainly for experts and intermediates, for beginners we would give 2 stars out of 5. Chamonix’s smaller villages, such as Les Houches and Argentière, offer access to the same High quality slopes. If you still insist as a beginner to try here, then ski areas of Les Planards, Le Tour, Vallorcine, Argentiere/Les Grands Montets, Chamonix/Brevent and Les Houches has beginner slopes for different ages. Including areas for ski lessons for children.

3 Valleys (France) – Plenty of skiing to keep the most daring skier or snowboarder busy, three valleys have plenty of beautiful blue pistes, perfect for the intermediates and beginners. Speedy lifts go from village level from one side of the village towards Val Thorens and also towards Méribel and the rest of the Trois Vallées. This is the biggest ski area in Europe. Ski Resorts to suit all levels.

Best: Meribel, Courchevel (Courchevel 1850, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1550 and Courchevel 1300) and Val Thorens.

    Espace Killy (France)Excellent skiing & Après & a snow-sure glacier. Great après.

Best: Tignes, Although Tignes is mainly a resort for intermediates and advanced skiers and boarders, it does have some good beginner areas to offer. Val d’Isere, Linked to neighbouring Tignes to form a ski area of 300km of pistes and 78 lifts, Val d’Isere offers top quality, snow-sure slopes – from absolute beginner to veteran powder hound.

St Anton (Austria)Great base for Skiing and snowboarding. Serious skiers visit Arlberg region in Austria. St Anton is best for advanced skiers and snowboarders than beginners. Famed as the best après ski in the world. It Brags 340km of slopes, 200km of off-piste routes and abundant of challenging off-piste terrain.

Kitzbuhel (Austria) – Skier’s guide to Kitzbühel is it’s an intermediate to not-so-advance ski zone and definitely not for beginners, with many blue runs, good amount of reds, and some not-too-scary blacks it makes a great ski base for skiing holidays.

Mayrhofen (Austria) – Mayrhofen’s filled with red runs (with many marked blue) and suitable for intermediates well – it’s a Classic Tirolean atmosphere here with good après scene.

Dolomiti Superski (Italy) – If low prices, excellent food, wine, and a wonderful atmosphere are essential, then Italy is the place to ski. – It is the largest ski area in the world, having 12 resorts and 1200km of slopes.

Best: Corvara, Canazei, Selva and Val di Fassa. The slopes range from beginners’ to advanced level and are connected by new ski lift amenities. If you are in Italy, try Sella Ronda – Great for dramatic views, It’s a circuit of 23km of intermediate pistes in the Dolomites, connecting the resorts of Arabba, Val Gardena, Canazei and Corvara, all covered by the Dolomiti Superski lift pass with 433km of runs.

The 4 Valleys (Switzerland) – The Four Valleys Ski Area includes 8 Swiss Ski Resorts with a combined total of 412km of downhill skiing, with 205 marked pistes, served by a total of 92 ski lifts, Great to ski or snowboard in any of the ski areas of Bruson, Evolène, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Siviez, Thyon les Collons, Verbier and Veysonnaz.
